We went all in with shelter (energy check - design - reno) and had the best experience. Energy check and Chris’ team were so meticulous and technically sound! Leah and the design team blew us away with options that we couldn’t imagine that fit our needs and our budget. And the renovation part was smooth, on schedule, and accurate with Justin. Shelter really goes the extra mile to ensure you have what you want and that it’s done to the highest standard (this last part we can’t stress enough!). We’re already thinking about an addition down the line and we wouldn’t work with anyone else when the time comes.

Shelter Alternatives designed and built our beautiful home 30 years ago. Since then, they have helped us with regular maintenance tasks, upgraded our home's energy efficiency, designed and built a home extension that complimented the original house design, renovated our laundryroom, and repaired tree damage to our home after Hurricane Helene. They have consistently responded quickly to requests, sought our input for each of the planning steps, kept us updated on job progress, completed jobs with high quality standards, and followed up to ensure any questions or problems were addressed to our satisfaction.

We contracted with Shelter Alternatives to renovate several areas of a purchased home. Justin Buehler was our project manager, and he did a wonderful job managing Shelter’s staff and the subcontractors. We were living out of the area when the project was underway, and Justin made a point of providing timely updates on the job, including providing pictures of the work being done as the project progressed. Alice Coddington worked closely with us on the selection of tile, lighting, and faucets for our renovations, providing valuable insight into the best options for our renovation. When the project was completed, Ed Tuchler, Shelter’s President, came to the house to meet with us to ensure that we were completely satisfied with the work that had been done. The workmanship and attention to detail were outstanding. We would recommend Shelter Alternatives to anyone for renovations in their home.

Shelter Alternatives did a beautiful job building our home 28 years ago. They have also undertaken several renovations, and their work continues to be as excellent as it was back then. Most recently, they did some tedious deck work.

Justin was a pleasure to work with. I was out of the country while the project was being done, and he kept me informed of scheduling, progress, went out of his way to be sure the new stain matched the older stain, sent me pix as the project neared completion, and stopped by after I got home to make sure everything had been done to my liking.

I am so grateful for all Shelter has done for us over the years.. When I hear anyone asking for recommendations for a design/built company in the NRV, I unfailingly suggest Shelter. Shelter continues to have the best quality, personnel, and integrity of any company I’ve ever worked with.

Shelter Alternatives took our job when other installers said they couldn't do it, or were too busy. We needed a skylight replacement, and not even a well-known window and door company had the people to do it. Shelter Alternatives scheduled the job with us for a sunny day, arrived on time, did a great job, and was very polite & professional. The price was fair, and peace-of-mind remains outstanding. I'll definitely use them again, large or small job.

TLDR: I highly recommend Shelter Alternatives for design and general contracting.
Shelter Alternatives did a major home renovation for us that included completely removing the existing roof, replacing insulation with spray foam, replacing all duct work, and installing a new metal roof. The job also included completely demolishing and rebuilding one room, and converting attic space into another finished room. The job required a lot of subcontractors who had to be coordinated and managed, especially for the roofing job. Shelter Alternatives was excellent about ensuring that all of the subcontractor work was completed correctly and to our satisfaction. The insulation work is already paying off by cutting our power bill by more than half and making our house significantly more comfortable. I will definitely use Shelter Alternatives for any future renovations.

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?
+-

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
