This is the 2nd roof I've had replaced by Relyea. The first replacement we had done on our old house was great, however we didn't have the same experience with the 2nd roof replacement. I gave Bob an opportunity to rectify this problem before going this route, however for the past several weeks he has ghosted me and won’t respond to my E-mails.
I had my roof replaced by Relyea in July of 2021. Since then, we've had a consistent leak that Bob couldn’t fix. The first rain we received after having the roof replaced was heavy, and the rain came in through my garage ceiling like a waterfall. I called Bob and the crew he sent out worked on my roof and said they fixed the issue. Their fix, which I didn't know about until later when it leaked again, was to caulk where the J channel met my shingles. This held for a month before it leaked.
The 2nd fix they pulled up shingles and stuffed pieces of step flashing behind my siding. Initially, this fix held, or at least I thought, for a while. However, this wasn't the case. 6 months or so goes by and I started smelling a mildewy/musty smell in a portion of my finished basement that's below where the problem area was. I pulled back insulation in the basement ceiling around the rim joist and saw that the rim joist was wet and was showing signs of mold/staining. I called Bob again. He looked at my wall, and said it wasn't due to the roof and that it was due the front porch design. I found that odd as I've never had this problem before he did work on my home. I noticed that the siding on my exterior wall below my front porch roof/above my basement ceiling had water coming out of the weep holes of the siding. I chalked it up to wind, but I was skeptical of that as it was high up in an area that wind wouldn't push rain AND it wasn't windy when I found it. Being that he's in the construction field and does this for a living, I trusted him and went forward with a potential porch area fix. I had the waterlogged sheathing removed and replaced around my porch, as well as a piece of flashing put in around the perimeter of my porch. This didn't change much, and the smell was still in my basement.
A year later, I started to notice staining forming on my siding below where Bob tried to fix the initial leak. This wasn't present before, so I emailed Bob asking him if his team missed the kick out flashing into the gutter. He never responded, so I climbed up on my roof to see if I could figure out what was going on and what I found was sickening. Their fix attempts included caulking everything, and the caulk was starting to detach and crack, letting water in. There was no flashing directing water away from the wall and into the gutter and it was obvious the water was getting behind the wall and causing the issues noted above. The same thing was happening in a different area close by, which was putting water behind the wall above my front porch. This was causing the water to leak out of the weep holes in my siding. At this point I called in a new roofing company to come and look at what was done and what would be the best solution to fix the leak.
The roofer that came out said the missing kick out flashing was letting water into the wall system and when they pulled the siding off they saw evidence of staining/damage in both areas noted above. They said the fix attempts using caulk was sloppy and not a long term solution and that the step flashing Bob smooshed in between the wall and shingles weren't lapped correctly into the valley. The roofer ripped it all out and replaced everything correctly. Since the other roofers’ fix, we've had HEAVY rain several times. No leaks are present, my siding isn't leaking water out of the weep holes and the smell in the corner of my basement is gone.
I only asked Bob to reimburse me the amount the other roofer charged to fix Bob's prior work; I didn't ask him to pay for the drywall, sheathing, flashing etc I had to replace in my garage/basement/porch. He acknowledged receiving the reimbursement email, however he hasn't responded to any followups since.
I really wanted to give Relyea a great review because I love the look of my new roof, but there have been problems with the installation and their communication has been abysmal. After installation, I noticed the returns had not been shingled and in the spring, I noticed the roof was leaking and damaging my ceiling. After many, many, many phone calls and months of reaching out, the owner, Bob, finally came by to look at the unfinished work and look at the leaks and damage to my ceilings. He said he would take care of it. A month or so later, he sent a crew over to finish the returns. They completed most of the work, but then left in a hurry leaving a mess of shingles and nails behind. Relyea never called to let me know what happened. After many calls to them, I was finally able to speak with someone there who said someone had been stung by a bee and that they would be back in touch to finish the work and fix the leaks. They never came back. I have called them no less than 50 times since then and left messages. It has now been years, no one returns a call, and my roof still leaks. It is such a shame. I had heard this was a wonderful, reputable, local company, and I was happy to give them my business, but it has been a terrible disappointment.
Planned project in spring.nice people to talk to and came highly recommended. Bob and Marybeth were very bad at returning calls. Mistakes were made with my drawings costing us extra money. Bob is a sales man and he’s good at it but does none of the work. He’s unable to keep a a solid crew so he doesn’t show up or return calls. Now we are back at square 1 with time and money wasted.
