About the Business
What people say about “Paul's Ace Hardware”?
Customer reviews indicate a mixed sentiment regarding this store. While some customers appreciate the helpfulness and variety of products available, many express frustration with poor customer service, particularly towards the owner. Issues such as rude interactions and a lack of basic accommodations, like restroom access, have led to negative experiences for several shoppers. Delivery and communication also seem to suffer, as multiple reviews highlight unhelpful staff and the refusal to accept returns on opened items. Overall, the negative experiences, especially concerning customer service, overshadow the positive feedback.

I purchased a toilet and when it was scanned, it scanned for $140. Because the difference in price online, I wanted to verify it was the correct product, because the price online showed $180. After confirming it was the correct product, (and doing all the leg work to confirm tha) they increased the price $40 in by the time I got to the front, and the owner claimed the original person that scanned it, scanned something wrong. But the owner didn’t scan anything and just charged me the online price! Because I was in a pinch and unaware of any other place that sold toilets in Grinnell, I begrudgingly made the purchase and decided to take it up with Ace corporate. After discussing it with Ace corporate, they told me the stores can charge whatever they want and I’m SOL. Overall, this is a terrible business practice by a large chain like Ace, as someone who does construction for a living and spent over 50k in materials last year, I will never shop at an Ace hardware store ever again. And I certainly, will go out of my way, to ensure anyone I know, does not shop at this specific location ever again, due to their complete lack of integrity. You know, I would have been totally cool if they just said that their system hadn’t updated the price, or they priced it wrong, but instead the owner tried to throw one of their employees under the bus and then refused to scan it. They also don’t have public restrooms, which is pretty absurd in 2025.
You can NOT return an item for an exchange or refund if the package is opened. I purchased a weather station for a farmer east of Grinnell and it's display wasn't functioning properly and the buttons were not responding. I brought it back to the store with the receipt and packaging three hours after purchasing it. I was told rudely that they will not accept anything that has been opened (because..."we could only throw it away if we took it back."). The parking lot remains empty at this store frequently and I think I know the reason why. Customer relations are suffering terribly at the Grinnell ACE Hardware. I will take my business elsewhere...I don't need to run the risk of not being able to exchange a defective product and I don't need to be treated like I had a mushroom growing out of my forehead. I don't usually leave poor reviews...but, I felt an obligation to others to let them know about my experience. Caveat emptor!
Five stars for the help getting my Rim Lock from the store. Minus one star for not letting me use the restroom. Make your bathrooms available to the public. Don't be asinine.
