Needed to replace a flat roof on my home in Brooklyn, but I feared finding a quality residential contractor would be impossible based on previous experiences.
I’m a construction professional with 30+ years in the industry. Have worked as a Laborer, then a Carpenter, Carpenter Foreman, Field Superintendent and currently working as a Construction Manager. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management Engineering Technology from Stste University of NY. My expertise is in NYC Public School Capital Improvement Projects, but have been involved with some new construction projects. So it’s fair to say that I know what professional quality is.
I selected KNA, not because they were the lowest price (they weren’t), but they were more professional, seemed to have their shit together. Their price was within 5% of the lowest bidder.
They mobilized when they said they would. Completed the project when they said they would. Understood what my concerns were and how to address them. They were in and out like the wind, leaving a professionally installed roof system. There was no haggling for change orders or surprise fees for additional work required to finish the job and they left the property as if they were never there.

I was looking for someone to fix my old roof and a friend of mine recommended KNA because he had a very good experience with Nick. I just had my roof done by KNA and the experience was just as good as my friend's. The roof was done in less than 6 hours before the rain came. I also needed the gutters replaced and after the roof replacement I needed the gutter person to come back and KNA was very responsive and came back to help me. This is going to be a long review. Let me start by saying I am not an average roofing client; I am heavily involved in DIY projects. I spend a lot of time researching, studying, and watching best practice videos on YouTube. While searching online, I found KNA Roofing and called Nick for an estimate. Instead of just giving me a price or scheduling a time to meet, we exchanged detailed information about my project. He asked what I was looking for, why, how many families, the height of the building, and the number of layers of existing shingles. Initially, I thought Nick asked too many questions, but I later realized he used all that information with the GAF online tool to generate a price quote based on my feedback. This was very interesting because, with most contractors, I have no idea how they come up with the amount.

Once I knew the initial price was within my range, I scheduled an appointment to meet with Nick. When Nick showed up, he noticed a few shingles had flown away due to a strong wind two days prior. He helped stabilize those shingles at no charge. Then we discussed the type and placement of the skylight and whether or not to replace the gutter. To make a long story short, I later added a ridge vent, soffit, and gave him a second job at my secondary house.

What makes Nick different from other roofers is his flexibility and willingness to work with you. Many roofers will do the shingle roof, but not many can install skylights. Additionally, Nick is the only roofer I've worked with who balances the intake and exhaust. Generally, roofers will add a few more exhaust vent square boxes on the roof, but without enough soffit intake, the exhaust boxes are useless. Shingle companies will not honor their warranty if your roof doesn’t have proper intake and exhaust, so those 25-year warranties from companies like GAF won’t mean anything. If you need to redo your roof, I strongly suggest ensuring proper soffit intake; it will cool down your attic and lower your energy bills. There's much more science to roofing than just preventing leaks.

Nick also uses a product called Gaco, which looks like white paint that goes on the flat part of the roof. This can extend the life of the existing roof without replacing the entire roof. Gaco is a newer roofing method that works well, looks good, and doesn’t add much weight to your roof, unlike adding another layer of traditional roofing material.

My entire project for two properties with Nick lasted more than a week. There was one part I wasn't happy with, and I debated whether to bring it up with Nick immediately or wait until it became a problem. After sleeping on it for a few days, I decided to call Nick. He didn’t argue with me at all and agreed to send another team to redo the work. That meant a lot to me. Usually, roofers will just tell you to relax and assure you it won't leak. But I didn’t want to take any chances, and Nick was very cooperative.

I've done many home renovation projects over the years, and whenever there's a job, big or small, I'm always there to see everything from start to finish. Many workers are uncomfortable with this, but it’s my house and I'm paying for it, so I need to ensure things are done right. I don’t just look at the final work and the cosmetics; it's always the small details that matter most.

Nick is definitely someone I'll call for my next roofing project!

I cannot say enough good things about Mr Nick! Another company had looked at our roof and said we needed to file with our insurance company to get an entire new roof, even though it was in good shape and is only about 5 years old. Mr Nick took a quick look and said it only needed minor repairs. The price was affordable and he was very responsive. The job was complete in less than 2 days! Had a bad leak from my skylights, KNA came right away, measured the skylights and ordered. Wishing 2 days they had guys ripping the roof, installed new skylights and finished the same day. Today it has been raining and I have no leaks. Extremely happy with the service and the quality of work. I don’t really right reviews but they deserve it!
