Jim and his team are just phenomenal! I would not hesitate to hire them again! We discovered last September, through an unfortunate damp-wood termite incident, that we had a water damage problem in the wall of our master bedroom directly *below* the sliding door. I demolished the deck, (that was in need of rebuilding anyway,) in order to gain access to the siding below to assess the extent of the damage and found that it was, in fact, quite bad. (See pictures! ...it is estimated this was 8+ years of water-related rot.) I got it cleaned out, copper-greened, and covered in Tyvek for the winter so we could explore financing options. Fast forward to spring - We contacted Jim and a few other contractors in the area to get a bid. Jim provided us a very reasonable "materials + manhours" bid to repair the wall. It's spring, so they were about a month out on scheduling, but well within what I would expect for this kind of work from a contractor at this time of year. So fast forward to gig day - these dudes were in and out in mayyyyybe 2.5 days total, were incredibly professional, and did a bang up job of fixing this dang wall. (And for what it's worth - they had to build a retaining wall to hold up the floor, chip out the rot sections at a time, build support for sections they'd chipped out, and then replace with new timber. This was *not* a demo-and-go kind of gig.) I can't speak to other reviewer's experiences with Island Hammer, but mine was really fantastic. These dudes are on the level, and I would absolutely hire them again for any job big or small.

Incredibly shoddy work. He hires the cheapest least qualified and has no one to supervise them. Shoddy workmanship and substandard, sometimes used, materials. Ignorant of building codes and requirements. If you hire him you will have to bring someone else in to completely redo everything. So best to find someone competent to begin with. Any good reviews have probably been written by him under assumed names.

Project began well, good ideas with materials, but poor coordination with metal fabricator meant delays, redundant labor, increased costs. The result was good, but failed to cover the entry as commissioned, instead using wood entirely inappropriate with metal and glass/lucite suggested initially. Jim then claimed cost overruns after charging me for the wood labor costs with the substitution he ordered, I think unethically.

The rebuild of damaged siding and roofing was very good, completing the membranous covering.

Interior tile work in bath was superb, truly outstanding, even better than anticipated, by his son - quite the craftsman with an aesthetic gift. I wish the drawers had been up to this standard, but only adequate. Jim did provide a free, beautiful countertop overlooking the kitchen and shore views. Very kind, despite some installation minor difficulties, further delays, etc. but very much appreciated.

Most frustrating: the project took 8 plus months, left me disappointed and angry, with labor clearly stretched thin with other projects receiving priority. I would not likely do business with Island Hammer a third time. I doubt they would welcome my patronage again, as I expressed my dissatisfaction loudly, even rudely on one occasion after the eighth month. I did apologize.

However, I did drop by IH to shake Jim’s hand after the anger had passed. He was a gentleman, and no hard feelings persist; not a terrible outcome after all!

I’ve had far worse experiences with other contractors by far....

I’m a fan. My bathroom was configured wrong; with a smal space of around 24 sq feet without counting the standard shower stall, is pretty small. Island Hammer crew re-tiles the floor and shower stall, switching the head and washer/dryer unit; the bathroom looks and feels spacious. The work is excellent and most of all ; they are very courteous, professional and attention to detail. Onto the next project. Thank You!!

We were under a deadline to have a kitchen renovation completed before we moved into our new home. The crew did a wonderful job. Because of countertops that did not match, work was delayed a few days. When I came home the first day that we were actually going to stay in the house, they had unexpectedly cleaned everything up and moved (and connected) all new appliances in. It was awesome! There were a few minor issues, but we didn't really catch them until maybe a week after the work was completed. Other than that, we will definitely use Island Hammer again.

I enjoyed working with Jim and the entire crew. They were flexible with the timing of the building of my deck and it looks great! They were also flexible when I made changes. They were professional and made sure to consult me when there were any design issues. I would recommend them and plan to use them on future projects!

Called him to build a garage. He showed up at the appointed time to do an estimate, measured, we talked about plans & pricing. He said he'd get back. Two weeks later - crickets. Never heard from him again. If he didn't want the job, just tell me. Don't leave me hanging.

Do not waste your time or money here. My wife and I hired him to do a simple flooring job and home repair and in 3 months we couldn't get him to commit to a day or time to do the work. Additionally, he bought way too many supplies which we were stuck with. His office administrator never returned our calls. And my wife multiple times had to take off work and go out of her way to accommodate his office administrator's personal schedule. And when I went to his office to get my money back, the contractor was kicked back with his feet on his desk watching television. And then kicked me out of his office when I demanded a date for the repairs to occur or my money back. Then when I finally got my money back, there was over $600 missing in his invoice and that was already after he charged over $600 for his "time". I can not strongly encourage anyone reading this to stay away from this "business".

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?
+-

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
