Update: I hired another company and had them update the entire unfinished side of my downstairs and add a gorgeous bathroom with a walk-in shower for $45 grand. Too bad for you Dave.
Up to this point, I’ve had an excellent relationship with Highland Renovations. Over the years, I have paid them over $100,000 to remodel a master bathroom, a complete kitchen remodel, a basement remodel, new front door, new sliding door, and wood floor refinishing. They have done a great job. However, on October 27, 2020, I emailed the owner and asked for an estimate on some additional work. The work consisted of updates to a bathroom that his company had previously installed, with some other items. He wrote back and told me to make an appointment with the office, which I did. He came out to do an estimate on November 17, 2020. On January 5, 2021, Dave, the owner, emails me to let me know that he can’t find the required parts for a portion of the job, but has the estimate together for everything else, so I assumed that he’d be forwarding the estimate. On 01/18/2021, I emailed him back since I hadn’t heard from him, asking him to send me the estimate. I also indicated that I was looking at having a bathroom installed in the basement and was interested in getting an estimate on that as well. I received no response. So, I sent another email on 01/27/21 (it’s now been over 10 weeks since he promised the original estimate) to follow-up. Dave called me the next day and was extremely curt, to the point of rude. He indicated that we were “going in opposite directions” with regard to what I was looking for and what his company was willing to provide. In other words, he didn’t want to do my job because it wasn’t going to net him enough money to bother with. (Note: When his workers were here in the past, they told me that no job was too small.) If he didn’t want to do my job, he should have just said so in the first place instead of stringing me along for over 10 weeks! Dave said they don’t do $8,000 bathrooms, like they show on the internet. He asked me what I was looking to spend on a basement bathroom. I indicated around $15,000. He said they just did a bathroom for $17,000. So, I thought, well I can probably go for that. Then, he says that he couldn’t possibly provide me with a bathroom for less than the low $20’s. What is this, a form of bait and switch?
Now, here’s a guy that has taken over 10 weeks to provide me with an estimate on some minor home improvement items, but he can tell me over the phone how much a new bathroom would be, just like that. The unfinished basement area where I am interested in installing the bathroom is quite large. Dave has no idea the dimensions that I want my bathroom to be. And yet, he can just spout off an estimate, no measurements, and no idea what I want to do with the space.
Dave said if he did take the job, they couldn’t possibly do it until June or July, as they are all booked until then. He then said he didn’t want to waste his time providing me with an estimate on the bathroom since it looked like I was more interested in saving money than getting a quality product. Really? I was shocked and somewhat hurt by his demeanor and comments, after the relationship that I thought we had developed over the years. After spending over $100 grand with this company, this guy is going to complain about me wanting to save a buck? I’m done with Highland (high-horse) Renovations for sure. If you’re looking to do a job for anything less than $25 or $30 thousand dollars, don’t waste your time calling them. It appears they’re only in it for the really big $$$$. I suppose for this company, customer loyalty means zero. I am an elderly woman, who has recently lost her husband, a fact that Dave was keenly aware of. I thought that Highland would be a reliable home improvement contractor that I could count on for the rest of my days. It seems I was mistaken.
