Best lumber yard I've ever dealt with, and I've dealt with quite a few. Yeah, they're nicer than most of the rest, but I've also bought lumber there that cost LESS than the big boxes or even online mill-direct places and was much higher quality. I don't how they do it, but they do. I wish they'd expand to both sides of the river!

A big reason I chose to shop at Cowls over other big box stores like Home Depot or Lowe's is to support local small businesses. Cowls is far from that, owned by the largest private landowner in MA, it is local but not small. Additionally, while big box stores offer a full return policy no question asked you don't have that same protection at Cowls. It's great for picking up small things but I would urge you to consider big box stores for larger purchases.

The staff are knowledgeable and pleasant and the lumber is exceptional. Only four stars because the hours are not friendly to homeowners; one day with evening hours would be beneficial to DIYers.

I was having a hard time locating cedar planking for my deck, then came across Cowls. They had a good stock of exactly what I needed and the price was reasonable. From payment to pickup, I was put of there in 15 minutes.

We've gone to Cowls ever since we moved to Amherst in 1999. The quality of the products and the friendly knowledgeable service are unrivaled.

The prices at the big box stores are not better, and the value at Cowls vastly outstrips that of the big box stores.

We have purchased tools, lumber, and basic hardware, and also doors, windows, and our entire kitchen (cabinets, counters, island, etc). Cowls has my highest recommendation.

I used to think that Cowls only carried wood. That was a long time ago. Now I know they carry more than most of the big chains around, and I know that by purchasing it from here that I'm doing a good thing for local business and that I'm keeping my money local, as opposed to some CEO in a faraway place. I can't tell you how many times I look for something either in home repair or new construction, and Cowls always has what I need!

In this age of bulk garbage big box stores, and online shopping where you're completely on your own, local, high quality, construction tool and materials businesses are few and golden. Cowls is one such survivor. I'm grateful they are!

I've been going to Cowls since I was a little kid. My dad brought me there for their little wooden plane kits when he would pick up lumber for work. The guys that work there are salt of the earth amazing humans. They know how to satisfy your needs and actually care to do so. Local businesses are the best and Cowls blows the other hardware or lumber store national chains out of the water.

Real people who know the store and answer questions real. Described a need and what I believed was the solution was I informed (not talked down to) why it there was a better way and shown a less expensive solution. Which allowed me to afford a solution for the next issue on my list. 2 for 1!

The greatest lumberyard locally you can speak right to the owner of the paint apartment is wonderful the yard employees are excellent with assisting can ask for a better experience

My husband and I recently went to Cowls to look at flooring. We were still undecided on what we wanted, and they took the time to help us make a wonderful choice. They know their products well, and made good recommendations without being pushy. We appreciated their friendliness, patience, and knowledge, as well as their reasonable prices too. We will definitely be going back for future projects!
