Terrible experience with Sedgwick. Jonathan is great and believes in what he is selling, but the rest of the company didn't deliver or back-up what is being promised. The planning process went very smoothly and moved quickly, but as soon as that phase was over, it went downhill quickly from there.
We signed paperwork in July of 2013, but our house wasn't completed until December of 2014. When they repeatedly tell you that it typically takes about 3 months to build, don't believe it. 18 months for ours, not even close to 3 months. Also don't believe it when they say sometimes there are delays because they prefer to wait on "quality subcontractors" to do the work. Bull...they will use whoever they can find to do the work at the cheapest price. There is never any supervision for these crews either. Each project has a superintendent, but they are asked to cover so many projects so far apart that it is impossible for them to be there on a regular basis, not to mention the turnover rate. We went thru 4 superintendents during our process. Crews show to do work and there isn't anyone there to oversee whether they are doing a quality job or even installing the correct items. We had so many wrong things that were installed (wet sheetrock, bathroom mirrors, doors with trim where there wasn't supposed to be trim, wrong color mantel and column caps, wood floor where tile should've been, etc, etc) that could have easily been prevented with someone overseeing the details. Yes, they made an effort to correct them, but it's so much wasted time and materials and just delays the process even further. My advice is to stay on the superintendent, at least weekly, for a progress report. If they aren't going to show up on their own, then insist that you meet with them so they can lay eyes on what's been done. If you leave it up to them, there will be zero communication with the super. We initiated 90% of the communication during building, otherwise we'd probably still be waiting.
Sedgewick offers great choices of trims, moldings, etc but it is the cheapest stuff they can find at the lumber yard. It's nicked and dinged, definitely doesn't look like it is installed in a new house. The terrible paint job doesn't help either. Typical builder paint, so thin you can still see the wall on some of the lighter colors. The crew came back after we moved in to do some touch ups and fix some nail holes, but it didn't help. The mess they left wasn't worth the minor improvements that were made. Paint splatters on the garage floor, scratched the widow sills with the nozzle of the shopvac (that they borrowed from us), and managed to lose our dust pan. The hassle and another day out of work to be there wasn't worth having them come back again.
We did ask for one small thing to be fixed (under warranty) on the siding back in December 2015 and was promised it would be fixed when the weather got better. It's been 5 months since then and we haven't heard a word about it. We've just washed our hands of the whole thing.
These are just a few of the things we encountered, we could go on and on.......
Are we happy with our new house? For the most part, yes and lucky to have it. Would we ever have Sedgewick build for us again? Absolutely NOT!
