My house is in a large subdivision in Pittsfield Township near the Ann Arbor Airport. A hail storm in the summer of 2023 damaged the roof and gutters and a complete tear-off and replacement was needed. The bottom line is this: if you find yourself in a similar situation my advice is call Joe Wright at Scott Adams and you can rest assured it's going to be taken care of. That's all you really need to know but if you’re curious and have time, read on and I'll explain why.
TL;DR
After the hail storm a different roofing company — call them ROOFX —contacted me and asked if they could inspect our roof and see if it was damaged. A small leak had already begun apparent so I knew we needed help and told them to go ahead. The ROOFX sales rep was knowledgeable and courteous and frankly did a lot of good work with our insurance company. I was impressed and was ready to work with them on replacement. A quick scan of ROOFX reviews turned up a lot of complaints on the actual workmanship which concerned me a bit. Reviews are something I look at but it’s the internet and there are lots of reasons why a good company might get bad reviews. I put a lot more stock in actual references and asked for one or two recent ones from the area so I could take a look and potentially speak to the owners about their experience. And that’s when things with ROOFX fell apart. They could not provide a single reference in my area. In fact they never gave me any references anywhere in SE Michigan. Maybe they were just trying to get started in my area and I would be one of their first jobs. I don’t know. The sales rep was great but he wasn’t going to be the guy on my roof. And if things don’t work out for ROOFX and they abandon our area and concentrate work somewhere else, where would that leave me if a problem occurred? I just wasn’t willing to go there without even a single local reference.
But I had a flyer from Joe Wright at Scott Adams and the back of his flyer listed literally dozens of references. Several were direct neighbors of mine. Another half-dozen at least were colleagues from work who also lived in our sub. I talked to the neighbors, called a few work friends and every single one had a great experience working with Joe. One neighbor even told me he had a subsequent roof problem years later — well past warranty — and Joe personally came to his house and fixed it at no charge.
So I parted ways with ROOFX and called Joe at Scott Adams. Everything went smoothly, including working with the insurance company, scheduling, gutter installation etc.
Then in April of 2025 we had steady rain for what seemed like 48 hours straight and my wife saw a dreaded wet spot on the kitchen ceiling. Now we put things to the test. I knew who to call and sure enough Joe had one of his guys at my house the next morning. Suspicion fell on the Plumbing vent flashing but there were no obvious problem areas. Joe’s guy stayed with me as we searched out every attic space entrance to find one that let us see the area from inside. Finally found one I didn’t even know existed and sure enough the plumbing vent was the issue. So he resealed the flashing as completely as possible and I kept that attic area open to monitor for any additional leakage. We’ve been through 3 long, steady rains since that day and the area has remained bone dry so I’m confident the leak is gone.
I don’t know how that would’ve gone with the ROOFX guys. Maybe it would’ve been ok. Or maybe they would’ve left this area and my house wouldn’t be that big a deal for them. But I was sure that Scott Adams Roofing was going to handle it the right way and they did. Joe has a reputation for quality work in this area. People know him and they know Scott Adams Roofing and they stand by their work. End of story.
