Green Roof Diagnostics moves the understanding of vegetated systems from trial/error and experience to one of test and evaluating - and hopefully soon, standards of tests. Experience is one thing, but watching the samples tested goes way beyond that. I have visited the site and the test facility, and the learning experience is invaluable. I suggest that anyone involved in vegetated roofs, wether from design, landscaping or from the point of view of the civil engineer and water retention/detention, should make a visit a priority.

I have been to the Culpeper to visit the GRD laboratory now several times. It's interesting and fascinating at the same time that a green roof that appears to be a simple layer of soil and plants is quite the contrary. It is a tool that can be manipulated and improved to do much more then just retaining water. These guys are on the right track!

Over the past decade in the U.S. extensive green roofs have become more common place in the urban and suburban skyline. With vegetated roof systems proposed to support storm water management, thermal benefits, amenity space, roof life, etc there has been a lag in objective testing of profiles to established standards. Green Roof Diagnostics has developed an environmental condition lab that could bring the green roof industry to the next level. As a system provider, Stormwater Capture Co. employed GRD to test profiles that will help us evolve our approach to provide more calculable benefits to engineers, architects, and building owners. In working with them, the experience of the GRD team is broad in technical ability. It seems they have made it their mission to objectively raise the bar for an industry that has a lot more to offer the built environment.
